An exciting exploration of
the book making process and typographic design.

ISTD asked that a book was chosen from 100 books that changed the world and that its impact was exemplified through typographic based design. I chose Nicolaus Copernicus’ paper On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres in which Copernicus introduces the revolutionary Heliocentric theory (Sun at the centre of the solar system) in a world where the Geocentric theory (Earth at the centre) was dominant and protected by laws of heracy.

I used this project to be playful and explore new approaches with typography, such as warping keylines, encasing copy in shapes to turn body copy into design elements themselves, and creating illusion. Having made this book by hand from start to finish, I learnt a great deal about the processes that go into making a print item, from stock choice to final finishes; and in my particular case, the delicate process of hand foiling copy.
